Sewer Repair
Tree roots, cracked clay pipe and repeat backups in the line from your house to the street.
If your basement has a bathroom, a laundry or a wet bar below the sewer line, an ejector pump lifts that wastewater up and out. When it fails, sewage backs up into the lowest room of the house. We repair and replace ejector pumps from our Northbrook headquarters, 24/7.

An ejector pump moves wastewater from fixtures below the main sewer line, like a basement bathroom or laundry room, up to the level where gravity can carry it to the sewer. It sits in a sealed basin, usually in the basement floor. When the wastewater reaches a set level, a float triggers the pump and it pushes everything up and out. It's often confused with a sump pump, which removes groundwater, not wastewater.
Catch these early, before the basin overflows into a finished room:
Stop using every basement fixture and call. The pump isn't keeping up.
A sealed basin shouldn't smell. Odor means a failed seal, a vent issue or a basin that isn't emptying.
If the basement toilet or shower backs up while upstairs drains work, the pump is the first suspect.
A pump that never shuts off is fighting a stuck float, a failed check valve or a worn motor.
If your Northbrook home has a bathroom, laundry or bar sink below the sewer line, that plumbing depends on an ejector pump every time someone flushes or runs the washer downstairs.
Plenty of postwar and 1970s homes gained a basement bathroom or laundry long after they were built. If yours came with a later remodel, the pump may be 15 or 20 years old and may never have been serviced.
If your home has an overhead sewer system, every basement drain flows to an ejector pit. That pump is what keeps storm backups out, so it's worth keeping in shape.
Ejector pumps handle toilet paper and wastewater, not wipes, paper towels or grease. Those wrap around the impeller and burn out the motor.
An ejector pump failure is a sewage problem in your basement. We treat it like one.
Stop using the basement toilet, shower, sink and washer, then call. Our line is open nights, weekends and holidays.
A stuck float or failed check valve is a repair. A burned-out motor on an older pump is usually a replacement. We'll tell you which.

"I had water backing up in the basement on a Sunday. I called them and he came an hour later. John figured out the problem quickly-ejector pump, and what to do if it happens again. I did get an estimate for a new one if it needs replacing."
A sump pump removes groundwater. An ejector pump moves wastewater from basement fixtures to the sewer.
A sump pump removes groundwater from a pit and pumps it outside. An ejector pump moves wastewater from basement fixtures, like a toilet or laundry, up to the main sewer line. They look similar but they're not interchangeable.
Often 7 to 10 years or more. Older, noisy pumps are worth checking.
Many last somewhere between 7 and 10 years or more, depending on how much they run and what goes down the basement drains. If yours came with a basement remodel years ago and you've never had it checked, now is a good time.
Yes. The ejector pump lifts basement wastewater above flood level.
Yes. An overhead sewer system routes every basement drain to a sealed pit, and the ejector pump lifts that wastewater up to a line above flood level. If the pump fails, the basement drains have nowhere to go, so it's the part to maintain.
Stop using basement fixtures, leave the basin sealed and call us.
Stop using everything that drains to the basin: the basement toilet, shower, sink and washer. Don't open the sealed lid. Then call us, any time. We'll find out why the pump isn't keeping up and fix it before the basin overflows.
It depends on the pump, basin and access. You get a flat price before we start.
It depends on the pump, the basin, the check valve and venting, and how easy the basin is to reach. We give you a flat-rate price before any work begins.
