How an Overhead Sewer System Works
Your upstairs fixtures drain out above the point where the sewer could back up into them. An overhead system gives the basement the same protection. The floor drain, basement bathroom and laundry are rerouted to a sealed pit. An ejector pump pushes the wastewater up to a pipe near the ceiling, and a check valve keeps it from falling back. Gravity takes it from there.
