The Basics

What an Ejector Pump Does

Fixtures below the sewer line, like a basement bathroom or laundry, drain into a sealed basin. The ejector pump lifts that wastewater up into the main line. A float turns it on and a check valve keeps water from falling back. When any part fails, those fixtures back up.

Make It Last

How to Protect Your Ejector Pump

Only toilet paper and waste should go down a toilet that drains to an ejector pump. Wipes, paper towels and feminine products wrap around the impeller and stall it. Grease from a basement kitchen or bar sink hardens in the basin. Test the alarm once in a while by lifting the float, if you can do it safely. And have the basin checked when you notice odors, slow drains or a pump that runs more than it should.
