How a Tankless Water Heater Works
A tankless heater heats water only when a tap opens. Water flows through a heat exchanger, a burner or element heats it on demand and it goes straight to the fixture. There's no stored tank to keep hot, so there's no standby heat loss, and you don't run out partway through a shower. What limits a tankless unit is flow: it can heat only so many gallons per minute, so it's sized to how many fixtures you run at once.
