What Does a Catch Basin Do?
A catch basin is a box in the ground with a grate on top. It collects rain from your yard, driveway or downspouts and sends it to a storm sewer or drainage line. The bottom of the basin is lower than the outlet pipe, so dirt and leaves settle there instead of washing into the line. Over time that sump fills up. Once it's full, debris goes into the outlet pipe, the pipe clogs and water starts pooling on the surface.
