What Causes It

Why Skokie Basements Back Up

Most backups come from:

Roots in the Lateral

The most common cause in postwar lines.

Heavy Storms

When the sewer system is full, water pushes back toward basements.

A Broken or Sagging Section

Flow stops and debris piles up.

Grease and Wipes

They build up even in sound pipe.

Local Knowledge

Sewer Backups in Skokie Basements

In May 2020, Skokie got 7.35 inches of rain in five days, and the regional Deep Tunnel system reached capacity.

Basements Below the Street Sewer

Most postwar Skokie homes have basements with gravity floor drains, the lowest point in the house.

Village Streets Hold Water on Purpose

Skokie's flood control system is designed to hold storm water on the street for a few hours, but your own line still has to be clear.

Protection

A backflow valve or an overhead sewer system keeps sewer water out of the basement.

What Happened in May 2020

Over five days in May 2020, 7.35 inches of rain fell on Skokie, with 3.41 inches on May 17 alone. The regional deep tunnel system reached capacity, and many basements backed up. The village's flood control program holds water in the streets for up to four hours after rain stops, which protects many homes, but not every basement. The village has encouraged backflow valves or overhead sewers for homes with repeat backups.

A backflow valve may be enough.

Sometimes. A backflow valve on the main line can stop sewer water from flowing back in. For basements with fixtures, an overhead sewer is more complete.

Often only with a rider.

Many policies need a sewer backup rider. Check with your agent.

Porous items that soaked up sewage.

Porous items like carpet, padding and cardboard that soaked up sewage usually can't be saved. A restoration company can advise on the rest.
