How a Catch Basin Works
A catch basin is a box set into the ground under a grate. Surface water from the yard, a driveway or a downspout drops in, and an outlet pipe near the top carries it away. The space below the outlet collects sand, leaves and grit so they don't plug the pipe. When that space fills, the outlet clogs and the water stays where it is.
