We test before we recommend anything. Northbrook's water comes from Lake Michigan and is treated at the Village's own plant, so most homes don't need heavy treatment. A test shows what your water actually carries, including hardness, so you don't pay for a system you don't need.
Testing is also worth doing when something changes: a new taste or smell, rusty water from one tap, or scale building up faster than it used to. If a water heater failed young, a test tells you if a softener would protect the next one.
