How a Yard Catch Basin Works
Think of a catch basin as a small concrete or plastic well with a grate on top. Rain from the lawn, the driveway or a downspout falls in, and a pipe near the top carries it off to a storm sewer or a lower part of the lot. The space below that pipe is a trap: sand, clippings and grit sink to the bottom so they don't plug the line. Once the trap is full, debris rides straight into the outlet, and the next storm leaves a pond where the grate used to be.
